March 2006 "Dying for Something Indulgent?"

Jana Klauer. M.D., author of the new book "How the Rich Get Thin" (St. Martin's Press. 2006) recommends her anytime, anywhere Stop! Watch! method:

1. Set the timer feature' on your watch, computer or cell phone for 15 minutes-the maximum length of time that the average craving lasts.

2. Drink a large glass of water (the brain sometimes misinterprets thirst as hunger).

3. Have a small, low-calorie, protein-rich snack, which will satisfy you longer than carbohydrates. Foods containing the amino acid tryptophan, like skim milk or yogurt, may also help boost satiety and mood as well.

By the time your watch beeps, your overwhelming desire to eat cookie dough straight from the package should have passed. (We swear by it!)
